The two features we wanted to restore immediately were the beautiful wooden beams, and the interior stone walls.
While the beams were hidden under years of paintwork, they were still very obviously present, the stone work however, we couldn’t be so sure about. While our estate agent assured us during the visit that there was a strong likelihood our south walls were constructed out of stone, the only way of finding out was by taking a hammer to the wall…not something the previous owner would have appreciated at the time!
So you can guess the first thing we did on the day of completion and after being handed the keys…rather than cracking open the champagne, we packed a hammer in our bag, walked to our new flat and hammered a square hole through the plaster walls to find out what lurked beneath - stones or no stones.
How happy we both were upon discovering the original stone work, lying hidden under a thick layer of dust and plaster. The first restoration task was staring back at us, and we were filled with motivation to get on with it!
